More Demand for Velayutham
In spite of other big releases, producer Aascar Ravichandran managed to get bigger and more screens across Tamil Nadu and other areas for his Diwali release Velayutham. Released on October 25, the film has lived up to the expectations of not just Vijay fans, but has attracted the family audiences.
With a longer weekend still going on, the theatre owners and exhibitors have demanded for additional prints of the film. Across the states of Kerala and Karnataka, the fans circle for Vijay has increased than the usual limits. The repeat audiences in Kerala are rushing into the theatres to watch it again and again.
Well, its worth mentioning that Kerala audiences have welcomed even his films like Sura and Velayutham has become a huge hit over there.
Ilayathalapathy Vijay has thanked his fans for extending their support and making the film successful.

Velayudham review from Websites
what is the surprise and what makes Velayudham special? Vijay flaunts his pumped-up physique for the first time as he takes off his shirt in the climax. Director M Raja has packaged the film smartly and Vijay appears to be having a rollicking good time with his scorching screen-presence and his infectious enthusiasm for dancing. He throws himself completely into the film's visceral action scenes, puts his casual, laidback style of dialogue delivery to good use in the film's romantic and comic scenes.
Hansika looks cute, appears confident, and is well cast as the spirited Vaidehi. Her comedy scenes with Vijay are a scream especially the scene when she comes in western clothes to impress her lover. Genelia does justice to her role and Santhanams jokes are funny. Saranya Mohan is perfect in the sister role.
One major plus for the movie is Vijay Antony's songs which are melodious and mass. The Vijay introductory song Sonna Puriyadhu.., Chillaxxx.. and Molachu Moonu... are the pick of the lot. Raja has taken the basic thread of the film from Nagarjunas Telugu film Azad directed by his friend the late Tirupathi Samy. The original itself was etched out of Amitabh Bachchans Main Azaad Hoon which was inspired by Hollywood 1941 classic Meet John Doe.
On the downside, the film is far too long, especially the second half. Shorter in length, one song sacrificed, its action scenes trimmed, Velayudham would have been crisp. But still it is a perfect outing with family, if you are looking for time pass entertainment.
Verdict: Paisa Vasool

Vijay's wish to act in a Shankar's film might have come true with 'Nanban'. However, it is not going to be the usual Shankar movie we had watched so far. But there is nothing to worry about, as 'Velayudham' is 'Jayam' M Raja wearing the mask of Shankar and projecting the 'Ilaya Thalapathi' as the messiah of masses. The story is as old as the sun and the moon. Though it is actually inspired from Telugu hit 'Azad', Kollywood is already familiar to it thanks to a number of films from 'Indian' to to 'Citizen' to 'Samurai' to 'Anniyan'. To make things more clear, 'Velayudham' is about a common man, who vows to clean evil things in the society. The way it has been presented by Raja makes all the difference. The director has packed the screenplay with ingredients that would be liked by one and all. There is action, comedy, romance and sentiment- neatly placed and packaged. In all, Raja, in the able company of Vijay, has ensured that the film has got something for everyone to enjoy. Velayudham (Vijay) is a milk vendor in a village called Pavunoor, who has a sister Kaveri (Saranya Mohan) to shower affection and a cousin Vaidehi (Hansika Motwani) to go crazy about him. Life is cool for Velu till he comes to the city to withdraw money he had saved for his sister's marriage.
It's Vijay all the way. From scene one till the end, he is there fighting, dancing and tickling the funny bone. In comedy scenes, he allows Santhanam to dominate him and this brings the roof down. As the actor said in one of his interviews, 'Velayudham' is a Deepavali treat to his fans. Hansika, without vanishing with mere skin show, tries her hands at comedy too and her chemistry with Vijay is cool.
Genelia as television journalist fits the role well and she emotes well in serious scenes. Santhanam as Speed throws some good one-liners at the audience which are received well. There are Manivannan, Shayaji Shinde, M S Bhaskar and Suri too who do their parts well.
Vijay Antony has played to the gallery by giving songs that would be loved by Vijay fans. Priyan's cinematography does its bit in elevating Vijay's image. V T Vijayan's editing proves the experience the veteran has in the job. Tom Delmar's stunt scene is of top-notch quality. But nothing fails to stop 'Velayudham' from emerging a racy entertainer this Deepavali season. A right choice for the festival mood.
Velayudham - Vijay is the weapon

Velayudham Movie review Vellum Ayudham
In what could be the lone success among the Tamil movies released for this Deepavali, Vijay has once again proved that he cannot be written off or taken in a lighter vein. Of course, the entire media have been on the foray of focusing Surya starrer 7am Arivu, but it seems Velayudham will win the race at once. Prior to the release there has been good ratings for the opening for Velayudham and the maiden over, Deepavali day, has exhibited that the movie has definitely cleared the fence with a huge six. Perhaps this is a sign of warning to those who meddled with the release of his earlier film Kavalan and at the same time it is a rejuvenation to his slid career.
Verdict:This kind of movie is badly needed to please the personal fans of Vijay. As assured by both Raja and Vijay, before the release, this could make thunders in all centres barring the flaws which have skillfully entered.
Rating: 3/5

Behindwoods:
Vijay is back to what he does best; mass entertainers, and what better time to unveil a mass entertainer than Diwali. With the music already a rage, the excitement was palpable as fans headed in droves to theatres on the festival of lights.
Velayudham is seen in many ways as a comeback to triumphant ways for Vijay. Yes, Kaavalan was a respite, but it is Velayudham that will more or less decide whether the tried and tested formula that have been followed for Vijay starrers for almost a decade can still hold the audience.
Lets make things clear first, Velayudham holds no surprises in the premise or the central conflict. It is not only something that is seen in a large percentage of commercial entertainers, it is also along lines that are very similar to quite a few earlier Vijay films. But, Vijay films have always been about his presence making things much more exciting than they appear to be in the script.
Velayudham deals with one man saving the society from evil forces premise. Yes, we have seen it many times before. Here, the story is about how and why the man rises, how Velu becomes Velayudham. Once he has risen there is no looking back as he hunts down one bad man after the other, but that also earns him enemies who are nothing short of bloodsucking vampires. How does that affect his personal life and how he puts an end to what he began?
As you might guess, the seat of action is Chennai, cinemas chosen city to portray all corrupt people in Tamil Nadu and the messiah is one who arrives from the village knowing nothing about the notoriety of the big bad city. Of course, he soon finds out and decides that it is better to react than be subdued. And, there is a generous dose of brother-sister sentiment thrown in.
Dj vu anyone! Well, dont mind that because Raja has woven a script that makes you forget all this and concentrate only on the screen.
The first half is really a joyride, especially for Vijay fans as he is introduced as the fun loving, mischievous young man who will go to any lengths to make his sister (Saranya Mohan) happy. Vijay is an absolute livewire, be it in the electric dance sequences or the enjoyable comic exchanges, first involving Parotta Suri and M.S.Bhaskar and later with the extremely effective Santhanam. Of course, the director has not failed to keep pushing the central plot ahead steadily to leave the interval intriguingly poised. The second half arrives with more of action than anything else. Yes, there is place for a bit of romance and also some cleverly placed comedy sequences late into the half, but on the whole action does dominate. Again, as we have seen repeatedly with commercial films, it is the overdose of the action element, especially projecting the hero as an unassailable superhuman that makes viewing a bit difficult. Velayudham too falls prey to the same errors, though not to the irrecoverable extent that many other movies have fallen. Raja intersperses high octane action with a couple of well placed songs (Molachu Moonu and Rathathin Ratham) and a very sentimental pre-climax portion to keep the audience from feeling action weary. But, the dominant feeling as the end credits start to roll is that a racy and intelligent climax (not that the one now is non-inttelligent) instead of the heros mass appeal and a preachy message would have made the movie much better.
Raja has done a fine job of mixing all the elements that go towards making a mass hero film, though he has lost the balance a bit in the last hour. His adeptness at placing comedy, romance, sentiment and the mandatory 5 songs into a script that has an alter-ego(istic) superhero should be commended. Nothing looks out of place, as we enjoy Santhanams wisecracks, Vijays dances and the brother-sister sequences. It is a while since we have seen Vijay excel in an emotionally heavy scene, Raja gets it out of the actor, in Velayudham.
Also, placing 5 songs in a movie with none of them sticking out like a sore thumb is quite an achievement; though we should say that Vijays presence is a major factor in ensuring this.
Everyone in front of the camera has done a fine job. Vijay is sprightly, energetic and every bit the way we love to see him. He has experimented a bit with his look in the songs and they have come out well. Hansika is there in many scenes, but for most parts is a silent spectator, being called upon once in a while, mostly for glamour. She does not look out of place as a village girl, but the makers claim that she would remind us of Khushboo is an overstatement. Genelia gets quite a significant part and looks convincing. A laugh is guaranteed every time Santhanam is on screen. Saranya Mohan too deserves a round of applause for being good enough to make the audience feel the depth of the siblings bond.
During most of the talkie portions, the camera strictly adheres to the requirements. Some well shot scenes within a train are worth mentioning. But, it is in the songs that the lens turns on the magic. At least a couple of them are visual treats. The capture of landscape for Molachu Moonu is delectable. Action too has been designed well. Though the movie is of the superhero type, the fights have not been taken to those levels; keeping them down to plausible levels (by commercial cinema standards). Dialogues too deliver the occasional punch and there is one particular reference to the rather benign ways of India.
Verdict: Regular mass entertainer spiced up by Vijay.

Velayutham Movie Review
The making of the superstar in Vijay is already begun and this film Velayudham has rightly showed the big path the way the future Vijay projects should be made!
Yes, Vijay has taken the path of Rajinikanth of the 1990s. The films of those years catapulted the superstar to another level to see Rajini in the unshaken stage of evergreen top star of Tamil cinema. They also set a political platform for Rajinikanth. And, the same is happening now for Vijay. And, with Velayudham the stage is perfectly set!
Vijay is a village milkman, who is a happy-go-lucky guy and also liked by one and all. Saranya Mohan plays the sister of Vijay. Hansika Motwani the village beauty falls in love with Vijay.
A twist comes in the normal life of the village that fuels the angry young vigilante in the ordinary milkman. Vijay transforms into a vigilante and the savior of the village people from the hands of the evil minds.
Genelia D Souza comes to the village as a TV reporter, and while she captures the hearts of her TV viewers her heart is stolen by Vijay.
So, how the Vigilante Vijay defeats the evil forces and saves his people is said in a heart-gripping action sequences and intelligent climax! And, also who wins the heart of Vijay among the two ladies Genelia or Hansika? Watch it all and everything in Velayutham in the Silverscreen!
Velayudham is another milestone movie for Vijay as the movie has set the right stage for his political avatar! His varied body language as ordinary milkman and as a vigilante proves that the actor has matured to the next level.
Genelia has shed her girl-next-door image and comes as a new girl with a difference. Hansika impresses with her bubbly acting.
Santhanams comedy is another highlight of the film. Saranya Mohan also does a neat role in the film. Shayaji Shinde comes as villain. A big star cast has spread over the film including M S Baskar, Sathyan, Ilavarasu, Vincent Ashokan and Raaghav.
Music by Vijay Antony is extraordinary. His songs are already topping the charts. The songs Chillax and Ratthathin Rathame are big hits.
Priyans camera and V T Vijayans editing play a major role in the success of the film.
For the first time Graphics has been used this much for a Vijay film.
Director Jeyam Raja is famous for his remake hits with those romantic and family dramas. But, this time he has done an original action film. This big effort of Velayudham will definitely make him sign some more big action movies.
Overall, Velayudham is a super duper hit film that is going to see Vijay at another level of Stardom!

Victory March ? - The Hindu
Will Velayudham, set to hit the screens this Deepavali, turn out to be another winner for Vijay this year? The matinee idol shares interesting aspects about the much-awaited film with Malathi Rangarajan
Invariably, all my interactions with the Ilaiya Thalapathi have had me doing most of the talking! A poser that ran into a few sentences was rarely fielded in a similar fashion. Reply was almost always restricted to a couple of words! Slightly different this time as I shoot questions about Velayudham, which is ready to roll out this Deepavali, he fields them with cheer. Laughs Vijay: Basically, I'm reticent. To the extent that some find it exasperating. But that's my nature. All the same, I do share all the relevant material with you, don't I? And how can I go on and on about my own work?
Yet Vijay was quite articulate at the audio release of the film in Madurai and even sang the opening lines of a Velayudham number, which had the star-struck crowd going crazy! That's cultivated, to please fans who want me to croon a couple of lines every time I'm on stage. Otherwise I prefer to remain low-key, he says.
Taking risks
Director Raja had spoken to me at length about the risks Vijay has taken for Velayudham. In the name of authenticity, many heroes court danger while enacting action sequences. Risk, yes, but it's not recklessness, contends Vijay. Whether it is the stuntmen or the heroes, these days ample precaution is taken to ensure their safety. Of course, mistiming could lead to accidents. As it happened in his case when he jumped off a high rise for Piriyamudan and was confined to bed for 45 days. Yeah, as I said, the calculation went wrong, he shrugs. And do you know the doctors had given up on me and said I might not be able to walk ever? Yet why does he resort to such daredevilry? Even in Badri, he let a huge container lorry run over his hands. It was a much talked about scene then!
Surely, despite all the boldness he should be experiencing the jitters while actually performing the stunts. As I said, enough safety measures are taken and when my body double can do it, why can't I, is the thought that spurs me on. And no, I don't develop cold feet at all.
Spontaneous humour
Vijay may look sedate and serious, but he has been part of some unforgettable rib-tickling situations on screen. Who can forget the hilarity he provided in Friends, Ghilli and also in this year's January fiesta, Kaavalan? Comedy, when contrived, is bound to fall flat. Even while going through the lines I can gauge whether it would work with our audiences. Spontaneity will be a scoring point in the comedy concepts we've enacted in Velayudham.
And in classics such as Kaadhalukku Mariyaadhai and Kannukkul Nilavu, Vijay proved that he can be equally effective in sentiment. Does Velayudham offer him scope for another such sober, underplayed portrayal? Yeah, we have a few sequences, where both sentiment and action are the highlights. When you strike the villain with all your might to give vent to your pent up anger, the audience should feel the adrenaline rush. The empathy will surely translate into positive results,' my dad [director S.A. Chandrasekaran] tells me often. I feel the audience will experience it in Velayudham.
On and off, Vijay turns singer for his films. Did he feel he could have sung a number for Velayudham, particularly when he listened to Mulachu Moonu ' a chartbuster? Not exactly, but I like the Maayam Seidhaayo' piece too. They have been beautifully captured on screen. Priyan, the cinematographer, has been an asset to Velayudham. The speed at which he operates is incredible, certifies Vijay. And in the same vein adds, I've followed Raja's films and found him to be an astute filmmaker. Remakes aren't easy and the amount of originality he weaves into his scripts impresses me. Working with him in Velayudham hasonly reinforced my opinion.
The year began with a bang for Vijay when Kaavalan, which had a trying time finding its way to the cinemas, eventually, turned up trumps. Velayudham is Vijay's second release in 2011 and going by the buzz, should be another winner for the hero. Again to quote my dad, If the base of a line is strong, none can stop its run.' The premise is a highpoint of Velayudham, he smiles.
His audiences include men, women and children both young and old, besides a formidable fan base of hardcore loyalists. During an earlier meeting Vijay had told me, I give my audience what I as a movie goer like to watch on screen. So did he enjoy watching Velayudham? Sure, I did, he says, pauses for a moment and asks, I don't sound over-confident, do I? That's another interesting facet of this matinee idol the reassurance he seeks despite his words being measured.

Vijay in Kerala
Mollywood actors might have their own loyal fan base, but their counterparts in Kollywood have been steadily eating into their territory with hits after hits
Kollywood heroes such as Vijay, Suriya, Vikram and Sarathkumar have a cult following that surpass that of our own youth icons such as Prithviraj. This is apparent from the posters that can be seen all over the State and right besides Mollywood posters too! Vijay understands his fans very well and made it a point to visit Kochi on Saturday to promote his forthcoming film Velayudham. In fact, so intense are the feelings of his fans that all the junior artists needed for the final scene of the film, which had to be shot in a stadium in Kochi, were filled buy his fans themselves.
Few have come close to the lover boy image Vijay has portrayed, not to mention his talent for dancing and singing.
Vijay says, I am happy that the Kerala audience has been a big part of my success. He was also a present in Thiruvananthapuram to celebrate the success of his earlier films Pokkiri and Vettakaran.

Velayutham interview by vijay-sify exclusive
AVM Studio- The mood is upbeat as the Velayudham team is shooting for a special programme to be aired on Jaya TV.
Flashing one of his trademark shy smiles, Vijay speaks to Sridevi Sreedhar in his first interview about Velayudham releasing for Diwali.
Velayudham is special to you?
Yes, it is very special and I accepted the film, as I liked the story very much and working with my director Raja was a pleasure. My last release Kaavalan was a pure love story and now Velayudham has shaped out well as a sensible mass commercial film.
Why do you say sensible commercial film?
As reported by a section of the media, I dont play a superhero nor do I possess any super power. I play an ordinary man who has a reason to take the cudgels and fight the system. Director Raja has made the transformation of my character with realism and that according to me is the highlight. I shared excellent rapport with Raja and all credit goes to him.
Why dont you promote your films aggressively?
I hate to speak or praise my film before the release. I want my fans and audiences to go to the theatre without much expectation and get entertained. I hate to blow my own trumpet saying that my film will satisfy you and blah blah.. I have been getting a lot of positive feedback of the trailer and audio. Now after release, Im sure that the visual impact of songs will satisfy the audiences.
Tell us about the two heroines?
Hansika and Genelia were excellent co-stars. Hansika has terrific comedy timing and realising that, Raja utilised it to the maximum. Genelia has a very important role of a journalist who motivates and brings about a transformation in me.
Your next films are all with top directors like Shankar, Gautham Menon and Murugadoss. Was that a conscious decision?
(Smiles) If I tell you the truth, I have been contacted by the so-called big directors only now. I didnt plan anything. It just happened. Remember that I am an actor I do roles that are given to me. My job is to give the people a ticket to their very personal Disney Land for three hours.
You are working with Santhanam for the first time...
Yes, Santhanam has this unique quality of bringing a smile on everybodys face when he appears on screen. He need not even open his mouth to crack jokes and no wonder women and children love him. We had a great chemistry on the sets.
Which film will you be watching for Diwali?
I will be watching all the Diwali releases and I wish the 7aum Arivu and Velayudham team all the very best.
